Allelopathic Activity of Coffee Against Cicer arietinum and Triticum aestivum

چکیده
The present study aimed the evaluation of allelopathic effect of aqueous extract of coffee (Coffea arabica) against germination and radicle growth of Cicer arietinum and Triticum aestivum seeds. The extract at different concentrations was incubated in controlled conditions with the surface sterilized seeds of C. arietinum and T. aestivum and observed periodically for seed germination and radicle growth to assess the allelopathic behaviour. The extract mainly at higher concentrations demonstrated promising allelopathic potential by significantly affecting seed germination and radicle elongation of both C. arietinum and T. aestivum in a concentration dependent manner. C. arietinum was found to be more sensitive than T. aestivum. The present study demonstrated remarkable allelopathic potential of coffee against the test seeds. The effect was plausibly due to the alkaloid and polyphenols contents of coffee.

This paper presents evidence for the occurrence of proteinaceous inhibitors isolated from Chick pea (Cicer arietinum), Kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), Maize seeds (Zea mays), Wheat (Triticum aestivum) and Millet (Pennisetum typhoides). These seeds inhibitors exhibited inhibitory activity against alpha amylase from red flour beetle, T. castaneum. Out of five tested seed samples Wheat, Maize an...
متن کاملMajor Crop Species Show Differential Balance between Root Morphological and Physiological Responses to Variable Phosphorus Supply
The relationship between root morphological and physiological responses to variable P supply in different plant species is poorly understood. We compared root morphological and physiological responses to P supply in seven crop species (Zea mays, Triticum aestivum, Brassica napus, Lupinus albus, Glycine max, Vicia faba, Cicer arietinum) treated with or without 100 mg P kg-1 in two soils (acidic ...
